When German Michael falls on his way to school tram conductor Hanna picks him off the ground. Despite their age difference he becomes completely obsessed with her. They passionately surrender to love and after that he reads one book after the other to her, all the world literature he can lay his hands on until Hanna vanishes very suddenly. Eight years later Michael is observing the Nazi tribunal when he comes face to face with Hanna. She is standing trial for a terrible crime, but refuses to defend herself. Michael realizes the love of his younger years is hiding a secret that is more gruesome to her than murder.

Winner of 1 Bafta, 1 Golden Globe, 1 Oscar.
