PARANOID PARK
Gus van Sant
Starring: Gabe Nevins, Daniel Liu a.o., USA, 2008. 90 mins.: Spoken language: English, subtitles: Dutch.
Alex is an average adolescent in Portland, Oregon, who at first glance leads a completely inconspicuous life. Nothing out of the ordinary ... until he becomes involved in the death of a security officer at the rail track which runs behind Paranoid Park. He has no one to confide in and starts to write down his story. He is immensely stressed so he omits things and gets back to them later on or he repeats himself or deviates from the storyline in order to merge his own story in it. Director Van Sant succeeds in never confusing his audience though, despite the fragmentary structure, which he presents. The impression you get is that this is a sort of stream-of-consciousness-cinema in which the pace, structure and tone are dictated by the persona telling the story.
